about

As its title suggests, Trio reduces the sonic palette to a group’s smallest unit: bass (Jonathan Hughes), piano (Harry Graser), and drums (Joe Goretti). In the absence of a monophonic solo instrument, Jonathan Hughes delivers compositions driven by curiosity. Statements and declarations, which leave little room for the imagination of the listener, are eschewed for melodies that explore space, ponder questions, and honor the beauty in phrasing, in timing, and in tone — the elements that make music. This reserved approach lends a spirit of generosity to Trio, one that invites the listener to fill in the spaces with their own context, their own course. From our sense of anticipation, we conjure a narrative; we dream of a destination; we invoke our own resourcefulness. Patience is rewarded with carefully curated moments of surprise: a momentary key shift that almost sounds conversational, an unexpected rhythmic development, a glockenspiel, a human voice. That, as a player, the composer Hughes’s instrument of choice is the bass guitar, one whose voice occupies a frequency range generally below the din of everyday life, tells us all we need to know about the careful, almost fragile, conditions necessary to fully appreciate these pieces. There’s a quiet magnitude in the spareness of Trio, the way a macro lens can reveal an unexpected and poetic vastness in the small and the overlooked.
