about

One thematic preoccupation of Jonathan Hughes’s musical work is space, not merely the one that surrounds our tiny planet in all its vastness, giving us the very sky that silently conducts our days, but musical space — compositions rich in shifting textures, fields full and fields empty. Melodies soar and gently land, then let us time to hear the song’s heart and lungs thump and tick their way forward. Evenfall features the core ensemble from Hughes’s previous two efforts, Luna and Apollo Eleven Songs, but this time the group recorded live at Buffalo’s GCR Audio, an historic building and world-class facility that features a stately, acoustically-tuned room. The result is the sound of a quintet captured in the moment, breathing compositions to life, playing to space, giving voice to all those notions that daylight’s not long enough to understand.
